DM inaugurating the program

Nalanda, 19 October (NEWS IN BIHAR). Pawapuri Mahotsav 2025 was inaugurated by the District Officer and Superintendent of Police Nalanda by lighting the lamp today in Pawapuri of the district.

On this occasion, the District Officer said in his address that Lord Mahavir, the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism, attained Nirvana (salvation) in Pavapuri on the new moon day of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month in 527 BC.

This festival of Lord Mahavir has been celebrated by the Jain followers for the last 2,550 years. Jain community celebrates his salvation day with great pomp on the occasion of Diwali. Amavasya date 19/10/2025 is being celebrated this year as the 2551st Nirvana day of Lord Mahavir.

Lord Mahavir was the twenty-fourth Tirthankara of Jainism. Lord Mahavir was born about two and a half thousand years ago (599 BC), in Kundgram of Vaishali Republic in the prominent family of Gyatrik clan of Vajji Sangha. Kundgram is also situated in Kundalvan village of Silav block of Nalanda district. At the age of thirty, Mahavir became detached from the world and gave up the royal glory and took sannyasa and set out on the path of public welfare. And at the age of 72, he attained salvation from Pawapuri. During this period, many followers of Mahavir Swami were formed which included the prominent kings of that time, Bimbisar, Kunik and Chatak.

Mahavir Swami’s birthday is celebrated with great pomp by the Jain community as Mahavir Jayanti and his salvation day as Diwali. On this occasion, the District Magistrate appealed to the general public and said that in the election festival Bihar Assembly General Election 2025, as many voters as possible should come out of their homes and cast their vote on the polling day, 6 November 2025.
