Purnia, October 15 (NEWS IN BIHAR). Year
Amour assembly seat, which came into existence in 1977, has so far sent 11 MLAs to the assembly, but the picture of the area has not changed even today.
Despite being a part of Purnia district, this area comes in Kishanganj Lok Sabha after delimitation. Situated on the border of Purnia and Kishanganj, Amour is surrounded by Mahananda, Kankai, Bakra and Parman rivers, which have become the main reason for its backwardness. Every year the floods and erosion of these rivers change the geography of this place, houses, crops and people’s savings, everything gets absorbed in the river.
Displacement and migration due to floods and erosion is a permanent problem here. Thousands of people become unemployed every year due to cultivable land being cut into rivers and crops being washed away in flood waters. A large part of the working class migrates to other states in search of livelihood. Last time, AIMIM state president Akhtarul Iman had captured this seat. 25 panchayats of Amour block and 16 panchayats of Baisa block come in this assembly constituency, where the people are still deprived of basic facilities.
A permanent solution to the problem of floods and erosion has not been found yet. Hundreds of acres of land has been submerged in the bowels of Mahananda, Parman and Kanakai rivers. Many schools and religious places have become victims of erosion. Every year the administration does temporary relief work, but till now no concrete steps have been taken towards a permanent solution. The bridge construction on Khadi Ghat and Raseli Ghat is incomplete, due to which even today many villages remain disconnected. During the rainy season, the only support for the people is boat and Chachari bridge.
Health facilities are also in bad condition. There is an acute shortage of doctors and staff in most of the PHCs and APHCs. At some places there are no buildings and at other places there is lack of equipment. People have to go to Purnia for treatment, which becomes extremely difficult due to transportation difficulties. A large population of the area is dependent on quack practitioners.
The situation in the field of education is also worrying. The demand to open a government college has remained unfulfilled for years. Being a flood affected area, schools often remain closed and studies are disrupted. Due to weak economic condition, most of the students are not able to go out for higher education.
Even today, a network of roads and bridges has not been laid in this area surrounded by rivers. Many villages are still deprived of paved roads. Obviously, issues like flood control, bridges, roads, education and health will be prominent in this election. The people of Amour are again looking towards their representatives with hopes of development.
